The AD7245A is an 8-bit voltage-output digital-to-analog converter (DAC) manufactured by Analog Devices, widely used in industrial control, instrumentation, and test systems. Although the device is well established and technically mature, AD7245A is frequently listed as out of stock/0 In Stock on Digikey.com and requires a high price to order, especially for ongoing production and maintenance projects.
What Is AD7245A?
The AD7245A is a monolithic 8-bit DAC that converts digital input data into a precision voltage output. It integrates a DAC ladder, output buffer, and reference circuitry, allowing designers to implement stable analog output functions with minimal external components.
Unlike higher-resolution DACs, the AD7245A is often selected for systems where robust performance, predictable behavior, and long product life are more critical than ultra-high resolution.
Key Technical Specifications
From an engineering standpoint, the AD7245A provides consistent performance across multiple accuracy grades and temperature ranges.
Key characteristics include:
-
Resolution: 8-bit
-
Accuracy options: ±1/2 LSB and ±3/4 LSB
-
Output type: Voltage output
-
Temperature range: −40°C to +85°C (industrial), up to −55°C to +125°C for extended grades
-
Package options: DIP, SOIC, CERDIP, and ceramic chip carrier
These features make AD7245A suitable for both new designs and legacy systems requiring long-term component continuity.
AD7245A Ordering Options and Package Selection
The AD7245A family offers multiple ordering codes that reflect accuracy grade, temperature range, and package type. Common configurations include plastic DIP packages for development and maintenance systems, as well as SOIC and ceramic packages for space-constrained or high-reliability applications.
For procurement teams, understanding the exact ordering code is critical, as availability can vary significantly between package variants. Some extended-temperature and higher-accuracy versions are primarily supplied for long-term or project-based orders rather than spot purchases.

AD7245A vs AD7248A: Key Differences Explained
AD7245A and AD7248A are often mentioned together due to their similar architecture and electrical behavior. Both devices are 8-bit DACs designed for industrial use; however, they differ in package configurations and pin layouts.
In practical applications:
-
AD7245A is frequently used in legacy industrial equipment and control modules.
-
AD7248A may be selected when specific package sizes or footprint constraints are required.
Engineers evaluating substitutions should carefully verify pin compatibility and system-level requirements before making a replacement decision.
Typical Applications of AD7245A
AD7245A is commonly found in applications that require stable and repeatable analog voltage output rather than extreme resolution:
-
Industrial process control systems
-
Programmable voltage sources
-
Calibration and reference modules
-
Automatic test equipment (ATE)
-
Embedded measurement systems
These applications often have long operational lifecycles, which increases the importance of component availability and supply planning.
Market Availability and Supply Challenges
Today, AD7245A is considered a low-availability or allocation component in many regions. Standard authorized channels may offer limited or inconsistent stock, leading to extended lead times.
